Management of Flora Home International Schools, Phase II Extension, Jikwoyi on Thursday organised its Annual Cultural Activity Day, to showcase Nigeria’s cultural heritage and diversity.

The programme themed, ‘Culture; Centre of Unity’ was a mix of laughter and entertainment as the students thrilled the audience with dances, dramas, songs and various renditions from the three major tribes in the country. It was held at the school premises.

Principal of the school, Mrs Idakwo Cecillia, called on governments at all levels to make indigenous languages compulsory in primary and secondary schools.

She said that local languages had a way of reviving and protecting the culture and cultural values of any society.

“By local language, I mean indigenous language or dialect, not just the three major languages spoken in Nigeria. Every language is worth giving special attention because each language or dialect is part of the rich and diverse Nigerian culture. Let every child have access to learning the dialect in school,’’ she said.

Proprietress of the school, Mrs Florence Ubani said some students will do better with indigenous languages than English.

“Our language should not be optional. It is as important to the nation as the English language. It is our identity,” Ubani said.
