Students tasked on peaceful coexistence

The Southern Kaduna Joint Peace Committee (SKJPC) has tasked students of the Kaduna State College of Education (COE), Gidan Waya, on the need to engage in activities that promote peaceful coexistence.

A Co-Chairman of the committee, Dr Ahmad Yandeh, who made the call at a meeting with students of the institution, said students had a critical role to play in building social cohesion and restoring mutual trust among warring communities of Southern Kaduna.

According to him, the committee was planning an inter-communal football competition for youths and carnivals as part of effort to promote unity.

He further said the committee had visited all the chiefdoms and emirates in Southern Kaduna and that they pledged their cooperation and support.

He, however, decried the seeming link between consumption of harmful substances and insecurity, while urging the students to stay off drugs.

The meeting was convened in collaboration with the Nigeria Early Recovery Initiative (NERI), a component of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

In his remarks, the Senior Grant Officer of NERI, Adebayo Joshua, said the agency remained committed to achieving sustainable peace in Southern Kaduna, adding that NERI would continue to provide logistics and technical support for peace building initiatives.

The Provost of the COE, Prof Alexander Kure, who was represented by the Dean of Students Affairs, Dr Patrick Bosan, commended SKJPC and NERI for carrying students along in their peace building drive.
