Students told to shun vices as schools start 2nd term in Lagos

As primary and secondary schools in Lagos State resume for the second term of the 2021/2022 academic session, the Commissioner for Education, Mrs Folashade Adefisayo, has urged students to remain focused and shun social vices.

The Lagos State government had directed all public and private schools below the tertiary level in the state to resume for the 2nd term on Tuesday, January 4, 2022.

Adefisayo, during an inspection tour of schools to welcome students back from the Christmas holidays, urged students of Babs Fafunwa Millennium Senior Secondary School, Ojodu to be focused and optimize the essence of being in school.

This, she said, will enable them to achieve their purpose of having a bright future.

Mrs Adefisayo also counselled the students on the various strategies and ingredients of attaining success, encouraging them to exhibit good traits while in school as well as shun all vices including cultism.

She explained that the visit to Babs Fafunwa Millennium Senior Secondary and Grammar School, as well as Omole and Ojodu Junior Grammar School, was to express solidarity with the management and teachers and to follow up on the students after the tragic Ojodu accident in 2021.

It would be recalled that the state government had in December shut down Bab Fafunwa Millennium School, Ojodu, formerly known as Ojodu Grammar School until January 2022 following the accident in front of the school, which claimed the lives of two students and left 12 others injured.

She said, “It’s important we come here today as a government to comfort and calm our students, showing solidarity and love for them as they commence a new term.”

To avoid bad incidence in schools, the commissioner urged schools’ administrators to adopt zero tolerance for bad conduct and critically manage situations as they affect students.

She commended the principals of Babs Fafunwa Millennium Senior Secondary School, Babs Fafunwa Millennium Senior Grammar School, Ojodu Junior High School and Omole Junior Grammar School, Ikeja for their efforts in managing the students affected by the accident, urging them to ensure they followed up on every student involved.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mr Abayomi Abolaji, appreciated the efforts of the teachers, stating that the performance of the students at external examinations has improved.

Mr Abayomi urged the teachers to continue to encourage Lagosians that they should expect more positive results in the education sector.
