Forty students from the Government Secondary School, Unguwar Shanu, Kaduna State were trained in Plastic Waste Management skills as a means of protecting their environment.

The students, selected from JSS 1 to SS3 classes of the school, were sensitized on the importance of plastic waste management and what it can be used for instead of being thrown away unnecessarily.

Asmau Sagir, the convener of the program and a teacher in the school, said the event titled “My Plastic, My Seat,” is to create awareness on plastic waste management for students of the school, community residents, and other partners.

She stated that most of the students are teenagers aged 12 to 16 years and were selected to nurture their entrepreneurial mindset and encourage them to find ways to address global issues, especially plastic pollution.

She added that at the end of the training, she intends to achieve a safer community in which the students will understand the effects of improper waste disposal within their communities.

According to her, she realized that the improper disposal of liquid waste has become a problem in the community, as many people in the area open their septic tanks, which, if not addressed, can affect the health of the residents.

She explained that she initiated the programme in response to the problems observed in the community.

She appealed to the government at all levels to incorporate waste management into the school system, adding that not just in curriculum but also in practical applications to help students better understand the message.
