Students with Special needs deserve more opportunities – UBEC

He said there was need to open up more opportunities for students with special needs

Niger State Universal Basic Education Board has been commended for establishing entrepreneurial acquisition centre for the students with special needs.

The Team Leader, Federal Government of Nigeria/Universal Basic Education Projects Inspection, Dr Tom Ohikere, gave the commendation in Minna during the inspection of projects executed under the Niger State Government and Universal Basic Education Matching Grants and Direct Intervention, including the Entrepreneurial and ICT Centres at the Niger State School for Special Education.

He said there was need to open up more opportunities for students with special needs to acquire entrepreneurial and ICT skills in school to make them self-reliant after graduation.

He said the inspection was to assess the performance of Niger State government at the basic level of education.

The principal of the school, Hajiya Aminat Abdul, said the centre accorded students with physical challenges the opportunity to acquire hand-work including tailoring, carpentry, home management and ICT skills within one year before their graduation.

Speaking, the Permanent Member I of the Niger State Universal Basic Education Board, Umar Mohammed Alkali, said the board was also doing everything possible to assist the students set businesses to enable them to put the skills they had acquired into use.

The team also inspected the newly constructed blocks of classrooms in Model Primary School, Maikunkele, Model Primary School, Limawa, under Direct Intervention among others.
