The Benue State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has flagged off the teaching and learning of Tiv language in all public primary schools across the state.

Chairman of SUBEB, Rev. Philips Tachin, made the disclosure on Monday in Makurdi while declaring open a three day workshop for Education Managers and Classroom Teachers.

Tachin said it became imperative to induct the Tiv language in government owned primary schools in the state so as to enhance adequate understanding and learning of indigenous languages.

He added that the workshop entitled: "The Effective Teaching and Learning of Tiv Language in Schools," would give participants basic knowledge of how to handle the subject for better understanding of the pupils.

The board chairman further posited that a child who understands the language of his birth can do more excellently in other languages as he charged the participants to take the workshop very seriously.

Tachin maintained that the introduction of the Tiv language in Benue Basic schools would go a long way to easing teaching and learning in rural communities, stressing that his desire was to extend same to secondary and tertiary institutions in the nearest future.

He also noted that arrangements had been concluded to extend vernacular languages of Idoma and Igede to the primary education in the state just as he informed that an implementation committee had already been constituted to that effect beginning with the next academic session while arrangements were in top gear to translate science subjects into indigenous languages.

In his remark, a Professor of Tiv language, Kpamor Orkaa, who is also the Chairman Committee on implementation of indigenous languages in the sate emphasised that the introduction of  the Tiv language in schools was a milestone in the state’s leadership of SUBEB.
