Substandard equipment blamed for poor telecoms services

The President, Association of Telecoms Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), Lanre Ajayi disclosed this in Lagos last week.
According to him, proliferation of substandard equipment by the operators as a way of cutting cost and profit maximisation has worsened the situation.
Ajayi who described the outsourcing and managed services as a welcoming development in the nation’s telecoms sector as it focused on making the operators to concentrate on their areas of core competencies, said outsourcing would improve telecoms services.
He said investigations revealed that some of the service providers were patronising equipment vendors that offered cheaper prices, as against those with more expensive but qualitative equipment.
He attributed this to dwindling revenue streams and diminishing capital outlay in the industry.
The patronage of cheaper equipment vendors, he said, had huge implications on the overall engineering cost, which was a significant cost for the telecoms operators.
