Sudan’s Prime Minister, Dr Kamil El Tayeb Idris, has said his country is facing an existential crisis as a result of the war waged by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Idris disclosed this while presenting the Sudanese government’s initiative for peace to the UN Security Council on Monday.

Since 2023, the RSF has been fighting against the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) for control of Sudan.

Sudan’s Prime Minister said the attack by the RSF was in flagrant violation of all international laws and norms, which have led to an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe and regional and international instability.

Listing basic steps for peace, the PM called for the declaration of a comprehensive ceasefire under the joint supervision of the United Nations, the African Union and the League of Arab States, to be accompanied by the withdrawal of rebel militias from all areas they occupy, in accordance with the Declaration of Principles signed in Jeddah on 11 May 2023.

The Sudanese government also called for the withdrawal of militia fighters and their gathering in agreed camps, under

joint supervision of the UN, the African and the League of Arab States.

According to him, the plan includes the facilitation and securing of the return of displaced persons to their areas of origin while also facilitating the flow of humanitarian aid to those in need in all areas affected by the war.

More so, the PM called for the implementation of comprehensive disarmament under agreed international supervision, with guarantees that weapons will not be recycled.

Among other measures, the Sudanese government is planning to hold a dialogue during the transitional period, in which political forces agree on how to manage the state and govern the country.

“This will be followed by free and fair elections under international supervision to complete the requirements for a comprehensive democratic transition,” it added.
