A suspected suicide bomber yesterday attacked Collage of Administration and Business studies (CABS) Potiskum, killing himself and injuring 14 others in Potiskum local government area of Yobe State.
Police Public Relation officer, Mr. Toyin Gbadegesin, confirmed that the bomber killed himself in the process and injured several others.
Weekly Trust gathered that the bomber, who wrapped himself up with explosives, stormed the college with an AK-47 rifle around 8:30 am and started shooting in the air, a development that scared security men on guard, who gave him access into the premises.
“The security men on guard got scared by the sporadic shooting and fled; he entered the college premises and shot aimlessly at students and teachers before blowing himself off,” he said. He said that the bomber tried escaping the scene when he ran out of ammunition. “He detonated himself off to avoid being caught by the people running after him and he died instantly.”
It was gathered that students who attempted to jump over the college perimeter fence got injured.
A source at the Potiskum General Hospital confirmed receiving people that sustained various degrees of injuries. “We have received 14 injured, including six who sustained bullet wounds, who have been referred to Federal Medical Centre, Nguru, for treatment,” he said.
Weekly Trust gathered that the college resumed two weeks ago and many students decided to stay off-campus while registration is ongoing. This incident is coming two years after the college was attacked by suspected Boko Haram members, who killed a lecturer and burnt the administration block.
Yobe State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Marcus Danladi, said yesterday that they have arrested two accomplices connected with the attack. He said one of the gunmen was arrested in Potiskum town and the other in Nengere town.
“Yes, three of them went to the crime scene, the suicide bomber blew himself off, while the other two were arrested in Potiskum and Nengere towns, respectively,” he said.
