The police in Pakistan, said a suicide bomber who targeted a team of people carrying out a population census on Wednesday, killed five people including soldiers in a security escort.
Police official Nayab Haider told dpa that the bombing occurred in the outer suburbs of the north-eastern city of Lahore, the capital of the most populous province of Punjab.
According to the police the attack targeted a van carrying census officials as well as soldiers escorting them.
The bomber was either on a motorbike or approached the van by foot as it passed along a crowded road in the Bedian area of Lahore, Haider said.
Due to ongoing security concerns, Pakistan, the world’s sixth most populous nation with an estimated population of 200 million, is holding a census for the first time in two decades.
Punjab’s Justice Minister Rana Sanaullah said the activities of census would continue uninterrupted in Lahore and the rest of the province.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.
