Sule, Tume, Ushie, others win 2019 ANA prizes

E.E. Sule, Tosin Jobi-Tume, Joe Ushie, Emmanuel Osemeka El -Fransis, Ayo Oyeku, and Abba A. Abba emerge winners of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) literary prizes.

This was announced at the recently concluded ANA International Annual Convention which held from October 31 to November 3.

Sule won in the prose fiction category (worth 100,000) for ‘Makwala’, with Stephanie C. Odili coming second for ‘Deafening Silence’, and Sasi M. Jaja third for ‘Native Foreigners’.

In the drama category worth N1,000, Jobi-Tume won for ‘The Victims’, Omowumi O. Ekundayo (second) for ‘Jesus of Naijaret’, and Amechi Chiedu Obumse (third) for ‘The Curse of Igwe Enendu.

Ushie emerged winner in the ANA/Shehu Poetry Prize worth $100,000 for ‘Yawns and Belches’, Akachi Adimora Ezeigbo (second), for ‘Mixed Legacies’, and Yusuf Adamu (third) for ‘Places: A Poetic Geography’.

In the ANA/Abubakar Gimba Prize for Short Stories worth N200,000, El-Fransis won for ‘The Room at the Top’, Bura- Bari Nwilo (second) for ‘Colour of a Thing Believed’, and Su’eddie Vershima Agema (third) for ‘Tales of the Abroad by a Confam Africana’.

Oyeku won in the ANA Prize for Children’s Literature (N1,00,000) for ‘Mafoya and the Finish Line’, – Ogechi Ezeji (second) for ‘Dalu’s Diary’, and Vincent Ikedinachi (third) for ‘Timi and the Stranger’.

In the ANA/Maria Ajima Prize for Literary Criticism (N100,000), Abba emerged winner for Birth, Death and Re-birth: The Trope of Eternal Rejuvenation in Isidore Diala’s The Lure of Ash.

The prize judges included Prof. Nelson Fashina (University of Ibadan), Prof. Effiong Johnson (University of Uyo), Ismaila Bala Garba (Bayero University), Kano, Dr. Owojecho Omoha (University of Abuja), and Prof. G.M.T. Emezue- Alex Ekwueme (Federal University, Ndufu-Alike Ikwo)
