Suleiman Abba named Acting IG

He was appointed by President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday, following the retirement of erstwhile Inspector General of Police Mohammed Abubakar.
Abubakar retired having put in 35 years in service.
Until his appointment, Abba was the AIG in charge of Zone 7, comprising Abuja, Kaduna and Niger.
His appointment, which takes effect from today, was announced last night by Presidential spokesman Reuben Abati.
Abba, a lawyer by training, hails from Jigawa State and is an alumnus of the Nigerian Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies.
He was previously Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department, FCT Command, Deputy Force Secretary and Commissioner of Police, Rivers State.
Our correspondent reports that before Abba’s appointment was officially announced yesterday, he was seen at the Presidential Villa in Abuja along with the out-going IG, for a meeting with President Jonathan.
The Presidency intially announced that Abba was appointed “as the new Inspector-General of Police.”
But Abati issued a second statement later saying: “Please note that AIG Suleiman Abba’s appointment as Inspector-General of Police is in acting capacity.” Meanwhile, Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Mr Mike Okiro, has congratulated Abba on his appointment.
