The prayers were organised by the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) at the Abuja National Mosque, as part of efforts at tackling the rising crime wave and the Boko Haram insurgency.
Speaking during the event, Sultan Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar said the prayers were organised due to the need for Nigerian Muslims as a united community to offer supplications to Allah and find lasting solution to terrorism in the country.
“Coming together as one big family as Muslims in Nigeria, is an indication of the need to close ranks and remove all barriers and here we are, in the house of Allah as one family not as Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo or adherent of Izallah or others sects but as one big family of Muslims in Nigeria,” the Sultan said.
He said “We cannot claim to be religious and be Muslims without following the tenet of Islam. We cannot claim to pious in our ways when corruption is bedeviling our country, we cannot claim to be praying and hoping that Allah will answer our prayers when we are so corrupt and so morally bankrupt.”
Also speaking, Vice President Mohammed Namadi Sambo called on Nigerians, especially Muslims, to pray fervently for lasting peace and unity of the country.
He said, “Let me reiterate that when any adverse situation befell the Ummah during the time of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) and his companions, their greatest weapon was resorting to prayers to seek Allah’s intercession.
“We shall continue to organize prayers as frequently as possible and Allah in His infinite mercy will answer our prayers in removing in totality the act of terrorism by the Boko Haram and all other vices in Nigeria.”
He also urged the Muslims “not allow the few disgruntled elements among us to portray Islam and Muslims in bad light”.
The vice president also appealed to Muslim clerics to apply modesty in their sermons and preaching, while admonishing adherence to the Sunnah of the Prophet (SAW).
Speaker of the House of Representatives Aminu Tambuwal said the National Assembly was working with the executive arm of government towards ending insurgency.
He said, “As the Legislatures of this country, we have been working within our constitutional powers to support the Executive Arm of government in the fight against terrorism, we are expected first to appropriate funds to our security agencies that much we have been doing.”
