Shot! gathered that the trip to South Korea is as a result of the concerted efforts by Sunnyvale Taekwondo Club in partnership with Metropolitan Junior Taekwondo League and FCT sports council to develop taekwondo from the grass roots in Nigeria.
It was also learnt that the summer camp is usually organised by the WTF and International Taekwondo Academy in collaboration with Kyung University (Global Campus) every year.
The delegation led by the Sunnyvale Taekwondo Instructor and Director of Competition of the Metropolitan Junior Taekwondo League, Malam Abdulmumin Yusuf include Dynaam Depoet 11yrs,Kabir Zayyan Mohammed 10 years, Awoaome Oche, Godwin Abbah 8 years and John Agada 11years.
Abdulmumin said “The training would expose the kiddies to new modern technique which on their return they would pass on the knowledge to other kids in Nigeria”.
“We are quite elated with this rare opportunity to catch these kids are very tender ages and also give them the international exposure that would make them champions in future.
“It is our fervent hope that from these kids, future Olympians would be produced for this country”, he stated.
AbdulHakeem Shonibare who is the Metro League Director also assured that the trip would be an annual event for all kids who performed well in the Taekwondo League quarterly Championships.
He said the academic performance of the kids would also determine who would be chosen to be part of the annual training camp in South Korea.
The Suunyvale Taekwondo Club is said to be a corporate social responsibility, CRS,  project where kids from the neighbouring villages in Abuja are chosen to receive free taekwondo training with equipment and other incentives on the condition that they go to school.
Presently over 50 kids in the taekwondo club are on scholarship in various public schools in Abuja.
