As the Super Eagles enter the pitch in Johannesburg today to battle South Africa for the Africa Cup of Nations ticket, let it be registered in their hearts that they must not be defeated. That the South Africans came to Uyo and managed to beat the Super Eagles for the first time should be enough tonic to the Eagles to brutally revenge in Johannesburg, coupled with the dire need to put their feet in the next AFCON, after missing the past two editions of the competition. The absence of Odion Igalo and Francis Uzoho should provide the opportunity for others to make their mark and prove to us that they can deliver too. We expect a good result from the match today, and never anything like defeat.

We need more policemen to secure Nigeria
The Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, says about 334,000 policemen are currently policing Nigeria, and in spite of the challenges confronting the force, it had evolved modern strategies, principles and modules to keep up with security demands. This calls for concerted effort by the government to re-strategise for more effective policing of the country to tackle the numerous crimes, just as kidnapping remains one of the most disturbing crimes in the country. In the past, the villages were peaceful and generally crime-free, but even the villages have now been infiltrated by vicious criminals. We look forward to more effort at making the Nigeria Police a more effective force to reckon with.

Imo not anybody’s property
I was enraged to read that Uche Nwosu, the son-in-law to the Imo State governor, Rochas Okorocha, said that the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, Senator Hope Uzodinma, would not be governor in 2019.
Nwosu was also reported to have said Uzodinma is a tenant in the APC. This leaves me wondering what meat Nwosu feeds on to assume that the court will deliver judgment in his favour. It is very annoying to imagine that Nwosu would come out boldly to parade himself as APC governorship candidate even when he knows that Okorocha has become very largely unpopular as a result of his support for him. It will equally be very difficult for a son-in-law to succeed Okorocha because Imo State does not belong to Okorocha, but to the people of the state who will vote for their choice which certainly is not Uche Nwosu.

N/Assembly, please make laws to curb piracy
I wish to appeal to the National Assembly to make new laws and strengthen existing ones in order to check piracy in Nigeria’s territorial waters as the rising rate of piracy is continuously giving the country more negative image. There is also the ardent need to protect the country’s business environment in order to reduce poverty and unemployment. Many companies are relocating to other West African countries for better business environment and laws, and Nigeria cannot afford to remain soft on piracy and theft if it aims at attracting more investors to the country and creating jobs. The National Assembly should also give speedy consideration and passage to maritime related bills that seek to suppress piracy in Nigeria.
