Interim Super Eagles coach, Augustine Eguavoen, has given an insight into how he will set up the senior male national team ahead of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

In a video he posted on his Facebook page, Eguavoen said the strength of the team has always lied in the wings.

“We are known for flair and that’s why our strength has always been in the wings. When Westerhof came on board, he took his time and selected the personnel for the kind of football he wanted to play. We look at wing play and technique as well,” he said.

He further said that for his team to be stable, he will need a strong and commanding goalkeeper, defender and midfielder, while citing the roles former players like Stephen Keshi and Sunday Oliseh played during their days.

“To have a formidable team, you have to look at the spine of the team as well. When we talk of spine, which we call the axe, you have to have a solid goalkeeper who is commanding, a centre back who is very commanding as well. At that time, we had late Keshi, Oliseh.

“When all these are stable, the other ones can fill in the gap and we have a stable team. When the axe which is the spine is very solid, the way to go becomes very difficult for the opponent,” he said.

Eguavoen was appointed Eagles coach and will be in charge of the team as it begins preparations for the 33rd Africa Cup of Nations taking place in Cameroon January 9th – February 6th, 2022, and until the appointment of a substantive head coach.
