Nigerian football’s upward trajectory has received a fresh boost as Super Falcons Head Coach, Justine Madugu, and reigning African Goalkeeper of the Year, Chiamaka Nnadozie, have been shortlisted for prestigious Ballon d’Or awards, affirming the nation’s growing influence on the global stage.

Madugu, 61, has been nominated for the Ballon d’Or Women’s Johan Cruyff Trophy, which honours the world’s best coach in women’s football.

The Adamawa-born tactician earned the nod after guiding Nigeria to a triumphant run at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) — his first major title as head coach.

Before assuming the top job in late 2023, Madugu had served as assistant coach in four previous WAFCON editions (2012, 2014, 2018, and 2022).

His rise to the summit has been marked by discipline, tactical sharpness, and a revitalized attacking brand of football that led the Falcons past hosts Morocco and reigning champions South Africa to clinch the title. He was also named Best Coach of the Tournament at WAFCON 2025.

Madugu now finds himself in elite company, with fellow nominees including Sarina Wiegman (England), Sonia Bompastor (Chelsea), Renée Slegers (Arsenal), and Arthur Elias (Brazil).

His nomination is a powerful endorsement of African coaching excellence and a testament to Nigeria’s strategic evolution in the women’s game.

In another landmark achievement, Chiamaka Nnadozie has been shortlisted for the Ballon d’Or Yashin Trophy, awarded to the world’s best goalkeeper.

The 25-year-old has enjoyed a phenomenal season, recently completing a high-profile transfer to Brighton & Hove Albion after standout performances for Paris FC and the national team.

Nnadozie, widely praised for her reflexes, composure, and command of the box, has emerged as one of the finest goalkeepers globally.

Her nomination sees her line up alongside top goalkeepers such as Ann-Katrin Berger, Cata Coll, Hannah Hampton, and Daphne van Domselaar.

Already a two-time CAF Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year, Nnadozie’s recognition further cements her place among the elite and reflects the increasing respect for Nigerian talent on the world stage.

As the Super Falcons celebrate these historic nominations, Spain’s Aitana Bonmatí leads the race for the Women’s Ballon d’Or, aiming for a third consecutive win.

Winners of the 2025 Ballon d’Or, organised by France Football Magazine, will be announced during a star-studded ceremony on September 22.
