The Chairman of the FCT Football Association, Alhaji Adam Mouktar Mohammed, has said for the Super Falcons to stand a chance against Australia in their next group match at the ongoing FIFA Women’s World Cup, the former African champions must redouble the effort they put into the opening match against Canada.
Last Friday, the nine-time African champions forced reigning Olympic champions Canada to a barren draw in their opening group B match in Melbourne.
Next for the Super Falcons is the second group match against co-host Australia on Thursday in Brisbane.
While the Nigerian ladies ended 0-0 with Canada, Australia squeezed past the Republic of Ireland 1-0 in theiry opening group match to climb to the top of the table.
Speaking ahead of the match, Mouktar Mohammed, commended the performance of the Super Falcons against Canada but said they must step up their game, if they are to get a favourable result on Thursday.
He said even though the Super Falcons are the least ranked team in the group, they can spring a surprise against the Australians.
He said “I watched the match between Australia and Ireland and it was pulsating, tough and competitive.
“I, therefore, urge the Super Falcons to redouble their effort against Australia. Victory is possible but they have to do more in the way they defend and go on counter attack.
“Another thing is that Canada are ranked seventh in the world, Australia is in tenth place, and The Republic of Ireland is 22nd while we are number 40, so this tells the whole story. Only hard work and determination will give victory to the Super Falcons.”
Mohammed also said it is unfortunate that fast rising midfielder, Deborah Abiodun, who was sent off against Canada will miss the match on Thursday.
He, however, said the return of Rasheedat Ajibade and Halimat Ayinde, from suspension, will take care of the youngster’s absence.
“Ajibade and Ayinde who missed the opening match due to suspension will be available so I believe the team will be going into the crucial fixture high on confidence,” he said.
