Managing Director of the Company, Barrister Sani Marke, who said this in an interview, noted that the pilot project will start in Jalingo, Lau, Karim-Lamindo, Bali, Gassol and Ardo-Kola local government areas of the state.
“Apart from offering agric support services, we have entered into agreement with Arewa Cotton Limited, a well known company that is into cultivation and exportation of cotton, for the cultivation of cotton here in the state,” he said.
The problem farmers encountered was that there were no buyers when the textile industries collapsed and other companies that were into the business left Nigeria for other countries due to high cost of doing business in the country.
He added: “The good news, however, is that good times are here again. For every farmer who wishes to farm cotton, Supernova, in conjunction with Arewa Cotton, is ready to buy all that farmers would produce.
“We intend to encourage farmers by giving them inputs such as seedlings, fertilisers, agro chemicals and even tractors. Any farmer who has a piece of land and wants to farm cotton will be provided with these inputs at a price, which the farmer will pay back after harvest.”
The Managing Director regretted that agriculture, which used to be the mainstay of the nation’s economy before the discovery of oil, has now taken a back seat. He also lamented that most Nigerians have abandoned agriculture in pursuit of quick and cheap money in politics and in the energy and gas sector.
