The Subsidy Reinvestment Programme (SURE-P) has donated three locally manufactured ambulances to the Delta State government. Two of them are marine ambulances.
Programme Assistant for Subsidy Reinvestment Programme (SURE-P) in Asaba Dr Zolibe Anyamele, said the SURE-P office identified the need to give a boost to the health care needs of the people in the state.
Receiving the medical equipment in Asaba , Governor Ifeanyi Okowa said the gesture would accentuate government efforts towards effective and affordable health care delivery for Deltans.
Governor Okowa commended the marine ambulances as very appropriate for riverine communities as, “they are going to serve cluster communities in the areas of their operations.”
He acknowledged SURE-P’s desirable interventions, such as being mindful of health care challenges at the primary level, but expressed fear of the continued relevance and existence of the office under the new administration.
“For now, we do not know whether SURE-P is still going to stay funded because its primarily source of funding is not available, Senator Okowa stated.
He emphasised that though primary healthcare delivery is the prerogative of local government councils, the third tier of government has failed to accede to the responsibility due to challenges of poor funding.
Dr. Okowa while inspecting the ambulances which were locally manufactured and equipped, observed they were of international standards and urged patronage for locally manufactured goods to boost local economy.
