The police, on Wednesday, arraigned one Emmanuel Dayo in a Kubwa Grade1 Area Court for allegedly aiding the escape of a suspect from custody.
Dayo, of Shelter Farm Byazhin, Kubwa, Abuja, is facing a one-count charge of screening an offender.
The Prosecutor, Babajide Olanipekun, told the court that the defendant deceived the police at the Kubwa Police Station and entered a recognisance to produce one Moses Ogba for investigation when needed.
Olanipekun told the court that, “Ogba who is now at large was earlier investigated and detained by the police for allegedly forging documents and cheating a man of N2.5m.
“The defendant deceived the police into believing that Ogba was his business partner and the suspect was released to the defendant.
“However, during investigation, it was revealed that the defendant fraudulently aided Ogba’s escape from lawful custody.”
He said the offence contravened Section 168 of the Penal Code.
The defendant pleaded not guilty.
The Judge, Abdulwahab Mohammed, granted the defendant N1m bail with one surety in like sum and said the surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and must be a civil servant.
He adjourned the matter to December 21, for hearing. (NAN)
