A recent survey by ImpactNow has revealed that over 4,000 women and 28,000 children would be saved from dying in Kaduna over the next three years if appropriate investment is made in family planning.
Also, over N1 billion healthcare cost would be saved over the same period as well as averting over 730,000 unintended pregnancies, the survey showed.
ImpactNow is an Excel-based model that estimates the health and economic impacts of family planning (FP) in the near term. It is designed to model the impacts of different policy scenarios, and to compare the results of those scenarios in advocacy materials.
The chairman, Family Health Advocates of Nigeria Initiative (FHANI), Malam Shehu Usman Makarfi, in paper at a meeting with media executives in Kaduna called for adequate budgetary provisions and prompt release of funds to reduce high maternal and child death burdens in Kaduna State.
He said statistics showed that Kaduna has a maternal death ratio of 1,025 per 100,000 live births.
The goal of meeting Nigeria’s Contraceptives Prevalent Rate (CPR), he also said, could be attained if all barriers to family planning are removed. “Kaduna is expected to raise its CPR to 46.5% from its present level of 24.4% by 2018,” he stressed.
The Communication Officer of ISSA, Hajiya Hauwa Saulawa, however, noted that to yield positive result on the cause, the media must play its part in enlightening the public on the benefits of child birth spacing to the health of both mother and child.
