The Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS) has adopted a new cost measurement system called Building and Engineering Standard Methods of Measurement, Fourth Edition (BESMM4) in order to ensure that those who award contracts get value for money, BESMM4 was unveiled last week Wednesday at a two-day training workshop held simultaneously in Abuja, Bauchi, Benin, Abeokuta, Enugu and Kano centres.
It brings forth new standards, innovations and methods of measurement in building and engineering construction works, which will enhance delivery of value to clients of quantity surveying services.
Speaking at the opening of the workshop in Abuja, the president of NIQS, Mrs Mercy Torkwase Iyortyer announced that BESMM4 had become the only standard for measurement in the country.
She stated, “Let me place on record that starting from May 2017, only BESMM4 will be admitted for use on measurement papers for both Graduateship (GDE) and Test Professional  Competence (TPC) examinations.”
According to her, “BESMM4 will replace BESMM3 as the official standard method measurement of works to be used with conditions of engagement and consultancy services agreement to be approved and directed by the Quantity Surveyors Registration Board of Nigeria.”
