Speaking at the opening ceremony of the stakeholders meeting on the review of Survey Coordination Acts of 1962 and its subsequent amendments, Surveyor General of the Federation, Professor Peter.C Nwilo, said that the meeting is timely and appropriate, especially at a time the world is facing changes in the way we do things due to advancement in technology.
He said that at the inception the Act can be said to well crafted considering the needs and resources then but new emerging needs have made it imperative for the Act to be reviewed in tune with the current realities.
“In order to achieve this, you will recall that the theme of last year annual survey coordination conference was “Review of Survey Coordination Act in tune with the current challenges” and as part of the resolution at the end of the conference a committee was constituted to examine the Act and come up with necessary amendments that will make the Act to continuously be a reference statute for the surveying and mapping industry in Nigeria.”
Professor Nwilo said that this is not the first time the Act is being amended, adding that since inception it had undergone two amendments, one in 1968 and another in 1973 to allow the Act to live up to the vision of our founding fathers and current realities. He commended the Nigerian Legislature for adopting this law as part of the Act of National Assembly Chapter S17 (CAP S17) at the inception of democratic governance in Nigeria in 1999.
“Today`s  gathering cannot be a misplaced priority, it is another way of rubbing mind together in re-building this great legacy, for the Act to satisfy  the yearnings and aspirations of surveying and mapping community  Nigeria, and it is my hope that we shall do justice to it.”
