Surveyor-General of the Federation, Surv. (Prof.) Peter Nwilo, in a communique he presented to journalists in Makurdi recently, pointed out that devices such as unmanned Aerial System (UAS), Global Navigational Satellite System (GNSS), light detection and ranging (LIDAR) among others for surveying and mapping purposes can be used to combat the various crimes and mitigate the risks caused by natural resources.
Nwilo in the communiqué issued at the end of the 51st Survey Coordination and Advisory Board on Surveying Training Conference held in Markudi urged member surveyors to create more awareness among the public on the importance of geospatial data in security and national development.
The communiqué added the need to collect, assemble, aggregate all past, present and proposed records of surveying and mapping hosted by different MDAs in order to have a complete mapping meta data history of the country to enhance national security.
The surveyors described as impressive, the progress which has been made in the establishment of Continuously Operating Reference Stations (CORS) in various parts of the country for the purpose of harmonizing surveying activities including fast tracking the implementation of Systematic Land Titling and Registration (SLTR).
Nwilo therefore called on the three tiers of government to adequately fund surveying and mapping activities to ensure rapid economic development and good governance.
