The Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS) have expressed worries over 19, 000 abandoned public projects scattered across the country.
President of NIQS, Mrs Mercy Iyortyer made this known in Makurdi at a two-day workshop organised by the institute entitled, “Budgeting and Capital Project Monitoring and Evaluation in an Era of Change.”
She said: “There are up to 19,000 abandoned projects scattered all over the country. This is not only worrisome but a monumental waste of public funds which presents a wake up call for proper planning and monitoring of projects.”
Iyortyer therefore stressed the need for Quantity Surveyors to play crucial roles in prudent costing of projects, budgetary planning, cost monitoring as well as evaluation among others in order to ensure value for money of capital projects in the construction industry.
In his speech, Benue State deputy governor, Engr. Benson Abounu noted that the quantity surveyors are the bedrock of infrastructural development of any nation, adding that the institute has enormous task in ridding the country of failed projects occasioned by malpractices.
