Suspect in Ibadan serial killings escapes from police custody

The Oyo State Police Command confirmed yesterday that Sunday Shodipe, the prime suspect in the series of killings between June and July this year in Akinyele, Akinyele Local Government, Ibadan, Oyo State, has escaped from custody.

The Command, in a statement by its Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Olugbenga Fadeyi, said Shodipe escaped from lawful custody on August 11, 2020.

The Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Joe Nwachukwu Enwonwu, had paraded the suspect, Yinusa Adedokun, who was described as a herbalist, and Shehu Usman, who was said to have bought the phone of one of the slain victims, before journalists on July 17, 2020 at the Command’s headquarters for the alleged murder of six women, including a pregnant woman.

Shodipe, 19, had confessed to the killings.

Residents of the Akinyele area had taken to the streets yesterday over an allegation that the police had released the prime suspect, an allegation Fadeyi denied.

The statement yesterday, however, confirmed the escape of the suspect, with Enwonwu imploring the general public to be on the look-out for him and immediately inform the Command if they sighted him.
