The Cross River State Police Command has arrested a 39-year-old man, Udeme Emmanuel Ekpeme, for allegedly impersonating a medical doctor and defrauding a woman of N500,000 with a false promise of securing employment for her children at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH).
The command’s spokesman, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, confirmed on Tuesday that the suspect was arrested by officers attached to the Uwanse Division in Calabar South following a complaint by Mrs Edemawan Samuel.
According to the police, the complainant alleged that Ekpeme falsely presented himself as a medical doctor and collected the money from her after promising to facilitate employment for her children at the teaching hospital.
Akata said preliminary investigations indicated that the suspect used the false claim to deceive the woman into parting with the money.
He added that investigators recovered exhibits believed to be connected with the alleged offence, while the suspect remains in police custody.
The Commissioner of Police in Cross River, Rashid Afegbua, has directed a comprehensive investigation to determine the full extent of the suspect’s activities and ascertain whether there are other victims.
The police spokesman said the suspect would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations if sufficient evidence is established.
