Suspected phone snatchers stab truck drivers in Abuja

Suspected phone snatchers  attacked three truck drivers and inflicted injuries on them while fleeing with their mobile phones in Unguwar Dodo, Gwagwalada Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

It would be recalled that Unguwar Dodo has been repeatedly linked to criminal activities, including daylight robberies and alleged hideouts for hoodlums in the area.

A resident, Shamsudeen Ibrahim, said the incident occurred on Tuesday at about 11:43 p.m.

He said about 21 armed hoodlums, wielding knives, sticks and iron rods, attacked the drivers who had parked by the roadside to rest.

According to him, the attackers split into two groups and descended on the sleeping drivers inside their trucks, injuring them before escaping with their phones.

He said two of the drivers sustained serious injuries, while the third was hit on the head with a stick.

“The victims were later rushed to a nearby clinic for treatment by vigilante members who responded after the attackers had fled,” he said.

A vigilante member in the area, Ishaku Bala, also confirmed the attack, saying the victims were identified as Garba Yakubu, Shehu Ibrahim and Lawal Rabiu.

He said the injured drivers were treated at a nearby clinic, adding that vigilantes were tracking the fleeing suspects.

“We will surely get them. Some of these boys are notorious for phone snatching and have been arrested on several occasions. We are on their trail,” he said.

However, a police source at the Gwagwalada Division said the command was not aware of the incident but would verify and respond accordingly.
