Operatives of the Zone 2 Command Headquarters, Onikan Lagos, have arrested a 54-year-old suspected member of a group of political thugs identified as Orekoya Abayomi, with two rifles and 21 voters’ cards in Ogun State.
The police also said the suspect was a member of the Eiye confraternity who had been terrorising residents of Ijebu-Ife and environs.
His arrest followed frequent cult wars in the Ijebu-Ife area of Ogun by rival members of Aiye and Eiye confraternities.
One Emerald Pump Action Gun with Breach No. 1335 and a locally made rifle were recovered from the suspect’s hideout.
The Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 2, Adegoke Fayoade, who confirmed the arrest, said it followed intelligence report about the criminal activities of suspected members of Eiye in the Ijebu-Ife area.
The AIG also said that the suspect and his gang had been terrorising Ijebu-Ife axis of the state.
He said based on the information; he quickly deployed the Zonal Dragon Squad II (ZDS-II) led by DSP Akeem Adeyemi for a discrete operation.
“Detectives from the zone raided the hideout of the cult group on March 19, 2025, while planning an attack. One Orekoya Abayomi aged 54, was arrested as others escaped through nearby bushes.
“He led the team to his residence where the following items were recovered: One locally made Single Barrel Pistol, six live cartridges, 21 voters’ cards with different names (suspected to be fake) and one Emerald Pump Action Gun with Breach No. 1335.”
