Police operatives in Rivers State have arrested a suspected car snatcher, identified as Iruo Young, following a viral video showing the theft of a Toyota Avalon at gunpoint in Choba, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state.
Police spokesperson in Rivers State, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, who confirmed the arrest in a statement on Thursday in Port Harcourt, said the suspect was apprehended after the command’s operatives launched a manhunt for the individuals captured in the video intercepting and robbing a car owner.
She confirmed the details of the operation, noting that the incident occurred at about 3pm and involved the snatching of a Toyota Avalon car at gunpoint.
“Through intelligence-led policing and technical support, operatives of the command have successfully apprehended one of the suspects, identified as Iruo Young, aged 42 years, at his hideout in Ikoku, Port Harcourt,” the statement read.
She added that during interrogation, the suspect voluntarily confessed to the crime, providing detailed information about his involvement.
The spokesperson said that efforts were ongoing to arrest other fleeing members of the gang and recover the stolen vehicle as well as the firearms used in the operation. The suspect remains in police custody, and an in-depth investigation has been launched.
The Commissioner of Police, Rivers State, CP Olugbenga A. Adepoju, commended the operatives for their diligence and swift response.
He also expressed gratitude to the public for sharing credible information that facilitated the arrest.
The commissioner warned that the state will not provide a hiding place for criminals, emphasizing the command’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of lives and property.
