A suspected electricity vandal was on Tuesday electrocuted while tampering with a Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JED) transformer in the Wadata metropolis of Makurdi in Benue State.
Witnesses said they woke up seeing the vandal’s lifeless body on the ground from the transformer located at the Wadata suburb in Makurdi.
They claimed the incident occurred around 4:30 am when electricity was restored.
The deceased identity, according to bystanders, was not immediately known but he had managed to cut several cables with pliers found on his body before power was suddenly restored, leading to his electrocution.

The incident, however, drew a large crowd to the scene and later “D” Division of the Police in Makurdi where people gathered to view the body after recovery from the transformer.
Dr Adakole Elijah, the Head of Corporate Communications, JED, confirmed the incident to our correspondent on the telephone, warning those in the habit of vandalising electricity facilities to desist from such acts.
“Yes, it is confirmed. A vandal was electrocuted early hours of today (Tuesday). He was vandalising our network when power was restored. We keep telling people not to go close to our installation.
“The matter has been reported to the police,” Elijah said.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Catherine Anene, also confirmed that she received reports of the incident, which according to her happened in the early hours of Tuesday.
Anene said, “I’m aware that someone was electrocuted in Wadata where he went to vandalise a transformer.”
