The Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Maigari Dangyadi, has urged the newly elected President of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), Comrade Salimon Akanni Oladiti, to sustain a culture of industrial harmony and constructive engagement.
Dangyadi gave the advice at the 6th Quadrennial Delegates Conference of NUPENG held in Lagos over the weekend, where Oladiti and 15 others were elected unopposed as national officers for a four-year term.
Represented by the Director of Trade Union Services and Industrial Relations (TUSIR), Falonipe Amos, the minister commended the cordial relationship that has existed between NUPENG and operators across the oil and gas value chain, noting that such cooperation had contributed significantly to stability in the sector.
He said while unions have the legitimate duty to push for improved welfare for their members, dialogue must remain the primary instrument of engagement rather than confrontation.
The minister described the outgoing leadership of Comrade Williams Akporeha as exemplary, particularly in its commitment to constructive engagement, improved welfare packages, and the promotion of industrial peace.
In his acceptance speech, Comrade Oladiti pledged to consolidate on the gains of the outgoing administration, promising stronger union structures and improved welfare for members.
“We are committed to building on the solid progress established by Prince Akporeha’s administration. We will strengthen the Union and uphold the dignity of labour,” he said.
Oladiti also stressed collaboration with government and stakeholders, while affirming that the union would continue to engage employers through diplomacy to secure better conditions of service for members.
Earlier, Comrade Akporeha highlighted key achievements of his tenure, including improved remuneration, establishment of a modern secretariat, and introduction of health and life insurance schemes for members.
