The Vice President (North-East) of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Comrade Ahmed Kagana Amshi, has called for stronger collaboration between the media and sports administrators to accelerate the growth of sports in Nigeria.

He made the call at a one-day symposium organised by the Gombe State chapter of SWAN with the theme “Sports and Media: Shaping the Future Together.” Representing the National President, Mr. Isiah Benjamin, Kagana described sports and the media as partners with a symbiotic relationship that inspires, educates, and entertains society.

He urged sports administrators to involve journalists in planning and budgeting, noting that their participation would strengthen accountability and inclusivity. Kagana also announced that SWAN’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations would hold in October 2025 in Abuja.

Gombe FA Chairman, Yakubu Sarma, highlighted the role of sports journalism in inspiring athletes, informing the public, and checking administrators, while identifying fake news, social media, and professionalism as key challenges facing the industry.

SWAN Bauchi Chairman, Bala Bawaji, commended the Gombe chapter for leading in the North-East, while ALGON Chairman, Barrister Sani AA Haruna, represented by Ibrahim El-Bash, pledged continued support for sports development beyond football, with emphasis on grassroots sports.

Earlier, SWAN Gombe Chairman, Mark Nuhu Mabudi, described the symposium as historic, noting it would revive the chapter, boost membership registration, and strengthen SWAN’s role in sports development.
