Nigeria and Switzerland have reached an agreement for the return of Benin bronzes and other artefacts, as both countries move to deepen bilateral relations across multiple sectors.
This followed a meeting between Vice President Kashim Shettima and Swiss Vice President and Foreign Minister, Ignazio Cassis, in Abuja on Tuesday.
Cassis, accompanied by his wife, Paola Rodoni Cassis, was received at the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, after which both leaders held closed-door talks.
Speaking to journalists, Cassis pledged Switzerland’s support for Nigeria in addressing insecurity in the North-East, as well as ongoing efforts in vocational training through Swiss companies operating in the country.
On cultural cooperation, Cassis confirmed plans to return artefacts to Nigeria, noting that both countries meet regularly to review progress in areas of mutual interest, including migration and cultural exchange.
Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, said the meeting builds on a long-standing relationship between the two countries dating back to 1961.
He confirmed that Switzerland has agreed to return Benin bronzes and other artefacts from the historic Benin Kingdom, describing the move as a significant step in strengthening cultural ties.
Tuggar also noted that the Swiss Minister of Culture is expected to visit Nigeria soon to advance the restitution process.
