The outgoing Senator of Niger South, Mustapha Mohammed, is bitter that National Working Committee of APC did not fulfill its alleged promise to give him an automatic ticket to contest the senatorial election as a reward for not decamping to PDP with Senate President Bukola Saraki, his political mentor.

The party might have actually made the promise simply to foil a purported plot by Saraki and PDP to entice APC Senators into PDP to get enough numbers to impeach the President.

But is the senator so confused that simple logic has eluded him? The party knew it will have been an election suicide to field him for the contest.

It might be because of this promise that Senator Mohammed didn’t bother to campaign for both the primary and general elections.

His confidence must have been boosted by the fact that he was one of those legislators who insisted that Niger State party officials, from wards to state executives should be affirmed for another term of office.

Despite the fact that some more popular members were successfully screened to contest at the state party congress, the Senator and others prevailed on the government for affirmation of all the incumbents.

The deal was for the party officers to also grant the legislators automatic tickets or vote for them at indirect primary elections.

Unfortunately for them, our Governor, Abubakar Sani Bello, supported the choice of the majority of party members for direct primary elections.

Of course Senator Mohammed and the other legislators were not prepared for this and they woefully lost the primary elections.

Instead of accepting the will of Allah they want to use their fat wallets to procure victories from the courts.

Thank God, the courts are not selling judgments but upholding peoples’ choices. What is baffling to reasonable minds is why a politician would insist on representing his people when the people have overwhelmingly rejected him. The answer is personal enrichment rather than serving people.

Whilst the other six contestants for the senatorial nomination ticket, some with higher votes than the Senator, have accepted the primary election result, he is hoping to repeat what he did in 2015 to get into and remain in the red chamber of the National Assembly, NASS.

Having gotten used to the national cake, he will expend all the resources at his disposal and employ every trick in the book, including lies and blackmail, to return to NASS in June this year.

After threatening the party to no avail and spewing lies to gain public sympathy, his last card is to blackmail the judiciary.

By Allah’s Might all his scheming will come to nothing.

Niger South, historically and presently endowed with selfless politicians, deserves a better representation this time. The failure of our youthful senator has become an embarrassment for the youth.

He is either overwhelmed by the high public office or lacks the capacity to manage it. Let him take it easy and bow out honourably in June this year.
