The idle mind they say is the devil’s workshop. When someone is not engaged positively, he/she will surely be engaged in a negative manner. We have a lot of youths roaming the streets across the country, doing nothing, not because they don’t want to work, but they can’t find any. These people must eat, clothe, shelter and buy other necessities on a daily basis to survive. Again, we should not forget that the consumption of the unemployed persons are autonomous, which does not depend on the level of their income. Also, many people who desire education cannot access it because of its high cost. Others with interest in research and development have been discouraged because research has no value as far as Nigeria of today is concerned. Even university research projects that are compulsory for every graduating student are left on the shelves to gather dust.
When men and women of productive age are out there doing nothing, the society suffers. We are bound to have problems because those people must survive either by hook or crook. It is time our government takes a look at this and devises a means to take people off the street. People in the position of authority (government), must develop the mind set of expansion in every sector of the economy to accommodate the millions of youths churned out of secondary schools and tertiary institutions on yearly basis. We must develop the system to absorb school leavers and graduates of different fields of study in order to have a workable and productive economy, which will ensure a peaceful society. The government should invest in human capital development, education, health, power, road, agriculture, commerce, and other infrastructural facilities. Our government must do more to provide true justice because anarchy and insecurity strive in an unjust society. The easiest way to tell anyone to be patriotic in the midst of poverty and hunger is to provide their needs and take away their worries.
The government should devote more time, energy and resources to revamping the economy as a way of solving the challenges of insecurity.
