The need to raise the standard of Nigerian universities cannot be overemphasised and it was for that reason that President Muhammad Buhari appointed Professor Abubakar Adamu Rasheed as Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC).
Professor Rasheed’s appointment is not unconnected with his performance in Bayero University from 2010 to 2015 as Vice Chancellor.  Between 2014 and 2015, 87 capital projects were initiated at four of the five campuses of Bayero University, and most of them were commissioned before his departure.
He also ensured that innovations, researches, manpower development were boosted. He further worked to ensure that the Faculty of Medicine was transformed into the College of Health Sciences at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) with four faculties and 29 departments, in addition to the Centre for infectious Diseases Research and Centre for Advanced Medical Research. 
 Rasheed assembled a team of both leftists and rightists to develop his 2010 to 2015 Development Plan, which was used to among other things expand academic programmes.
One of the major challenges Professor Rasheed had to battle was ensuring cordial relations among administrators of Nigerian universities. Many universities suffer due to scuffles between vice chancellors and registrars or council. 
His appointment and other reputable people from the academia is indeed a plus. We are very optimistic that the former vice chancellor will do well at the National Universities Commission.
