The opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) has won 14 governorship seats according to results from 16 states announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) yesterday.
The Peoples Democratic Party of President Goodluck Jonathan won in four states, but lost four of its former strongholds to the APC.
The APC candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari defeated Mr. Jonathan in the March 28 Presidential election.
Nigerians went to the polls on Saturday in the second round of voting to elect governors and members of state houses of assembly in 29 states.
Of the results so far announced, the APC has retained Kano, Sokoto, Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, Kwara, Yobe and Imo states. It also won five states controlled by the PDP namely, Kaduna, Katsina, Bauchi Adamawa, Kebbi and Plateau.
The PDP has retained Gombe, Enugu, Akwa Ibom and Ebonyi states. With most results counted the party is on the verge of losing three more states to the opposition APC. These are, Benue, Jigawa and Niger states.
The APC won all the Senate and House of Representatives seats in Gombe state in the first round of voting on February 28, but it has now lost the governorship poll to the PDP.
The PDP on its part had won all the Senate and House of Representatives seats in Nasarawa state but the party has failed to unseat Governor Umaru Tanko Almakura of the APC who has won his re-election bid.
The big winners in the elections are Speaker House of Representatives Aminu Waziri Tambuwal who won the governorship election in Sokoto state; Aminu Masari who won in General Buhari’s home state, Katsina and Ahmed el-Rufaí, Kaduna state.
Kebbi State All Progressives Congress (APC) Governorship candidate Sen Atiku Bagudu, was Sunday night, declared winner of the governorship election held in the State.
Others are Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, Lagos State;   Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, Kano; and Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo who has retained his seat in Gombe state.
Bagudu won in 19 out of the 21 Local government Areas with total of 477,376 votes while retired Gen Sarkin-Yaki Bello of the PDP came second with a total votes of 293,443 votes.
Also Barr Simon Lalong of the APC caused an upset in Plateau state. He polled 564,89s votes yesterday to defeat Senator Gyang Pwajok of the PDP who received 520,572 votes.
Those that suffered set back are Governor Ramalan Yero of Kaduna state and Nuhu Ribadu who is already trailing in third place in Adamawa state.
