The House of Representatives today said that Speaker Aminu Waziri Tambuwal and his deputy Emeka Ihedioha did not appeal Monday’s court order on the 37 defected lawmakers.

Reacting to media reports on the matter, deputy House spokesman, Rep Victor Afam Ogene (APGA, Anmabra) said there was no how the Speaker and his deputy could appeal the matter on their individual capacities.

He said although the duo were joined in the suit which sought to restrain the defected lawmakers from making any leadership change in the House, it is the legislature as an institution that could appeal such matter, but that has not been done.

“Some publications tried to drag the principal officers into the matter. But Speaker and the Deputy Speaker didn’t appeal the matter. They couldn’t have done that in their personal capacity. This is an institution, so we shouldn’t bring in mischief into the matter,” he said.

Also, a statement from Ihedioha’s spokesman, Oke Epia, said “For the avoidance of doubt, the Honourable Deputy Speaker wishes to clarify that he is just a nominal party in the suit by virtue of his office and counsel was briefed by the Management of the National Assembly to represent the House of Representatives as an Institution.”
