He made the remark in Abuja on Friday night at a dinner to celebrate 50 years anniversary of the United Republic of Tanzania.
An independent Tanganyika and Zanzibar united on April 26, 1964 into the present Tanzania.
 Gambari, who was the special guest at the occasion, told the audience that Nyerere was genuinely committed to the struggle for the liberation of Africa.
He said Tanzania has been at the forefront of the struggle in Africa until the continent was free. However, Gambari noted that the relationship between Nigeria and Tanzania is very close as they share a common course in the liberation struggle.
Tanzanian High Commissioner to Nigeria Mr. Daniel Ole Njoolay said the country has developed greatly since the union was formed in 1964.
He said Tanzania for a long time has been involved in the liberation struggle, but now would be focusing on economic diplomacy.
