The Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Taraba State has said that the state government is currently owing over N15 billion in pension and gratuities.

This was disclosed, Thursday, by the state chairman of the Association of Senior Civil  Servants of Nigeria, James A. Ajoji, at  the delegates conference of the association held in Jalingo, the state capital.

He said it was sad to note that civil servants were afraid to retire because of the non payment of their benefits. Mr James explained that many civil servants who retired in the state had died without getting their retirement benefits.

He therefore stressed the need for the state government to start paying pension and gratuity  to retired workers in order to reduce their suffering.

“ Many retired civil servants in Taraba now find it difficult to cater for themselves and their families  due to  non- payment of their benefits,” he said. The association also identified lack of implementation of promotion and salary increase as a major concern among civil servants in the state, imploring the state government to redress the situation.

The association also urged the state government to revisit its earlier plan to sell its houses based on owner occupier basis as is the case was in many states of the federation.
