The Chief of Mutumbiyu in Gassol LGA of Taraba State, Alhaji Sulaiman Muhammed, has warned fishermen in his domain to desist from using chemicals and explosives to catch fish or face sanctions.

The warning was delivered at the palace in Mutumbiyu shortly after the turbanning of Alhaji Bala Jambari as Sarkin Tarun (leader of fishermen) and Alhaji Tukura Julde as Danrimin Mutumbiyu.

The monarch condemned the destructive fishing methods, blaming them for the sharp decline in fish populations and the extinction of various species in rivers and ponds in the state.

He reminded fishermen that there are existing laws in Taraba State prohibiting such practices and promised strict enforcement.

Alhaji Sulaiman urged the newly installed Sarkin Tarun to closely monitor his members and discourage environmentally harmful fishing activities.

“Fish populations have drastically reduced, and many species are now extinct. Those who depend on fishing for their livelihoods are suffering. This is largely due to the use of chemicals and explosives,” he said.

He also called on residents to remain peaceful and vigilant, urging them to report any suspicious movements to security agencies.

In his address, Alhaji Bala Jambari, speaking on behalf of the newly crowned title holders, assured that the use of chemicals and explosives would be addressed under his leadership.
