Alhaji Hassan Mijinyawa, Chief Press Secretary to Gov. Danbaba Suntai, expressed the concern of government at the opening of the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) in Jalingo.

He said the National Sports Commission (NSC) appeared to have abandoned the camp being built by the federal government to prepare athletes for both national and international competitions.

Mijinyawa expressed regrets that the state was under-reported by SWAN members and urged them to play up the importance of the camp in youth development.

Also speaking at the occasion, the National President of SWAN, Saidu Abubakar, said he was overwhelmed by the sporting facilities put in place by the state government.

“When I entered the Jolly Nyame Stadium, I was overwhelmed at the facilities I saw.

“I never imagined such facilities existed in this part of the country. It is a wonderful development,” he said.

The Chairman, Taraba chapter of SWAN, Kabiru Usman, appealed to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to make the Jolly Nyame Stadium one of the venues for Premier League matches.

But responding to the allegation of abandoning the Gembu training camp, Chief Press Secretary to the NSC, Mr Tony Oheari, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the Commission accorded top priority to the camp and other facilities in the country.

“ There are other training camps like the Abuja Athletes Development Centre, the one in Jos and about two others which the government intends to revive this year.

“This administration has not abandoned any of them because the Minister of Sports has reiterated this many times since his appointment,’’ he said. (NAN)
