Taskforce arrests suspected extortionist in Benue

A suspected ‘Marching Ground’ gangster, identified as David Yaikyo, was apprehended by the Benue State Taskforce on Illegal Levies and Related Criminalities. Yaikyo, from Ajaba settlement in Makurdi, was arrested on Tuesday after allegedly demanding a N300,000 “marching ground fee” at a building site.

Following a distress call, the taskforce acted quickly and arrested the suspect, who reportedly confessed to the crime.

Gbenda Terver, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Hyacinth Alia on Youth Organization and Illegal Levies, paraded the suspect and warned young people against engaging in acts that undermine the state’s development.

He urged residents to support the taskforce by reporting suspicious activities, stressing that anyone caught extorting money under the pretense of a “marching ground” fee will face the full force of the law.

The suspect has since been handed over to the Police Area Command in Makurdi for prosecution.
