TAU Unveils Advanced Virtual Dissection Technology

Thomas Adewumi University (TAU), Oko-Irese, Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, has taken a major step in advancing medical education with the acquisition and deployment of a state-of-the-art virtual dissection table to enhance the training of its medical students.

The development was disclosed by the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Francisca Oladipo, who described the initiative as a landmark achievement in the institution’s drive for innovation and academic excellence.

The university recently unveiled the Acsclepius TBK 84 EA Virtual Dissection Table, an 84-inch interactive 3D platform designed for anatomy, radiology, and surgical simulation.

The equipment, supplied by 3B Scientific, Germany, represents a significant investment in modern medical training infrastructure.

According to the VC, the deployment of the technology places TAU among the first institutions in Nigeria to integrate virtual dissection systems into its medical curriculum, marking a shift from traditional teaching methods to advanced digital simulation.

The innovation, she noted, is a transformative step that redefines the conventional anatomy theatre, moving beyond cadaver-based learning to a fully interactive digital experience.

“With this innovation, students can now explore the human body in life-size 3D detail, examining anatomical structures layer by layer without physical dissection,” she noted.

The system allows medical students and doctors to carry out a range of advanced simulations, including virtual dissections of human cadavers, real-time conversion of CT and MRI scans into 3D models, and pre-surgical procedural training.

“It also supports studies in histopathology, radiology, endoscopy, and comparative anatomy across more than 40 animal species, offering a broader and more interactive learning experience.

“In addition, the platform provides access to over 12,000 curriculum-based assessment questions, enabling students to test their knowledge and sharpen diagnostic and clinical reasoning skills”, she added.

She said the innovation is a forward-looking investment that positions TAU among the leading institutions in medical training in Nigeria.

“This will significantly enhance the quality of medical education and prepare students better for modern, technology-driven clinical practice.

“We reiterated our commitment to academic excellence and innovation and this acquisition aligns with our vision of delivering world-class education within Nigeria”, she submitted.
