The students wing of Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has again called on the federal government to take a second look at the proposed Tax Reform Bill with a view to sensitising the people well before going ahead with its implementation.

According to a statement on Tuesday by Comrd Adamu Ibrahim Galadima, they made the call at a town hall meeting held at Federal Polytechnic, Damaturu, Yobe State.

It was themed, ‘Tax Reform Bills : A Catalyst For Economic Growth Or A Burden On The People’,

The speakers and participants rejected the tax reform bills, citing lack of reflection on the realities of the people while also having the potential to increase poverty, unemployment, weaken our educational institution and economic hardship.

The town hall therefore called for the immediate withdrawal of the proposed bills and urged the Federal Government to adopt a more inclusive and people-centric approach to all reforms.

It also called on all lawmakers to reject the bill as it is apparently rejected by their constituents.

“In closing, let us embrace the opportunity for reform in other aspects of our National coexistence, such as reduction of the cost of governance and improvement in government interventions to the poor and downtrodden, conscious of our challenges but steadfast in our resolve. The Nigerian Tax Reform Bill is more than just a piece of legislative proposal, it is a statement of our collective ambitions for a prosperous and equitable future.

“Therefore, the National Assembly is advised to halt deliberations on the bill and engage in more consultations to ensure the reform promotes National unity and balanced development. There is the need for a fair tax system that ensures no region is marginalized in the pursuit of economic growth,” the statement added.
