The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has said state governments must be given more cash to continue to provide resources for the upkeep of primary schools as contained in the 1999 Constitution.

National President, Comrade Michael Alogba olukoya stated this at a press conference on the funding and management of primary education as well as elongation of the retirement age of teachers in Nigeria.

 “We wish to propose that allocation from the Federation Account be reviewed upwards in favour of the States to enable them discharge this constitutional responsibility effectively,” he said. 

He said teachers retirement age should be raised to 65 from 60 years to increase the teacher retention rate in schools, saying, “This will help to check the rate at which experienced teachers are being lost in the school system. 

Every education system needs an appropriate quantity and quality of teachers to function properly.”
