The Commonwealth Youth Games’ last day saw Team Nigeria win three more gold medals, bringing their total tally to six gold and two silver while setting a new Games Record in the 4x100m mixed relay.
As a result, they finished higher on the overall medals tally, coming in fifth place behind Australia, England, Scotland, and South Africa.
Faith Okwose and Samuel Ogazi won gold medals in the women’s and men’s 200-meter races, respectively, after finishing first in the 100- and 400-meter races.
Okwose won the women’s 200-meter gold in 23.36 seconds, as expected, while her countrywoman Eyakpobeyan Justina had to settle for silver in 23.47 seconds.
Antigua and Barbuda’s Locker La’nica took bronze in the women’s 200-meter race.
In the men’s race, Ogazi put up another dominant performance; claiming the gold with a time of 21.22s.
Unfortunately, Okon Israel Sunday, the only Nigerian who advanced to the 200-meter men’s final, had to settle for fourth place with a time of 21.94 seconds.
Team Nigeria’s Ogazi, Eyakpobeyan, Okwose, and Okon saved their best performance for last, winning gold in the 4x100m Mixed Relay in 42.68 seconds.
The quartet broke Australia’s previous record of 43.19 set at the 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games in Nashua.
Team Nigeria competed in the games in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, with 25 athletes ranging in age from fourteen (14) to eighteen (18).
