Obasanjo for instance was the first military head of state to hand over to a civilian government and afterwards, Abdulsalami Abubakar was to tread that honourable path decades later.
But more recently, Obasano blazed the trail when he started writing letters to political leaders as a way of keeping them in check and many others followed.
Immediately he wrote a letter to President Goodluck Jonathan, his daughter; who ordinarily should have called her father and advised him on issues she felt strongly about, also took a cue from her father and wrote him a scathing letter. Later, President Goodluck Jonathan, Tony Anenih, Edwin Clarke and many others became copy cats when they used the same medium to write Obasanjo.
Now, Obasanjo has scored another first which many have found worthy of emulation. He tore his PDP membership card.
Before Obasanjo’s action, the known way of leaving a party is simply to announce defection, but since the former head of state tore his card, the fashion now is to do the same.
PDP stalwarts in Vice President Namadi’s Sambo’s ward were said to have emulated Obasanjo when they wanted to announce their defection. They tore their membership cards.
As Femi Fani-Kayode said when Obasanjo tore his card, that is rubbing it in on PDP’s face.
